A) ISI Certification

ISI full form – Indian Standards Institute, ISI is the certificate scheme under BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) which confirms that a product withstands the BIS standards which ensures safety.

ISI certificate allows you to use the standards mark, i.e., ISI Mark. Since 1955, the ISI mark is the standards compliance mark for industrial goods. This mark ensures that the product has abide by the Indian Standards which are laid by the Bureau of Indian Standards (national standards body in India which confirms that the product is secure and credible).

Under the ISI certificate, a total of 346+ products falls, which requires an ISI certificate mandatorily, without which the manufacturer won’t be able to manufacture and sell products in India.

What is ISI mark?

ISI mark is the standard compliance mark which conforms that a product is made as per the standards laid by BIS.

Who is authorized to provide an ISI mark?

BIS is authorized to provide the ISI mark through proper examination, evaluation, documentation, etc. This process ensures that a manufacturer has been following the standards and instructions laid by the BIS.

B) FMCS Certification

What is FMCS (Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme)?

As per BIS Act, 2016 and Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, BIS has the authority to provide the license to the foreign manufacturer to sell products in the Indian market.

FMCS BIS certificate is only granted to those manufacturers whose product conforms to the Indian Standards. Though, these standards could be voluntary or mandatory.

Is obtaining an FMCS BIS certificate mandatory?

Yes, it is essential to obtain FMCS for mandatory products. Without a certificate, you won’t be able to sell your products in the Indian market.

C) CRS Certification

What is CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme)

BIS operates the Compulsory Registration Scheme under the Scheme-II of Schedule-II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Further, under this, a number of guidelines have also been formed.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the body that evinces the quality of the product either of a brand or manufacturer. Further, it verifies that the product is secure and reliable for customers depending on the standards laid by BIS.

Under CRS, the electronic products either domestically produced or imported have to clear the testing to obtain the certificate.

To be noted, the conformity of the product will be procured after testing and examination.

On 3rd October 2012, Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012 was passed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) for different categories of 15 electronic products.

Under the same order on 13th November 2014, 15 more products were added, for instance, power adapters for IT products, mobile phones, point of sale terminals, a copying machine or duplicators, etc.

The list of products under BIS CRS is not limited to these products only, to ensure safer products, 13 more products were included on 23rd August 2017, some of these products are, LED floodlights, CCTV cameras or recorders, smartwatches, recessed LED luminaires, so on and forth.
